Security Program Management & Oversight: what Security+ tests and how to prepare
Governance, risk and compliance. The least technical domain and the one candidates most often underestimate, because it is written in business language rather than in the vocabulary of the tools.
What this domain covers
The list below follows the published exam objectives for SY0-701. Depth matters more than breadth here: the exam asks you to apply these ideas to a scenario, not to recite them.
- Security governance: guidelines, policies, standards, procedures, external considerations, and governance structures.
- Risk management — identification, assessment, analysis, register, tolerance and appetite, and the response options: transfer, accept, avoid and mitigate.
- Third-party risk assessment and management, including vendor selection, agreement types and ongoing monitoring.
- Compliance: reporting, monitoring, consequences of non-compliance, and privacy considerations.
- Audits and assessments, including internal and external audit, attestation and penetration testing.
- Security awareness practices, from phishing recognition to reporting and monitoring.
Where candidates lose marks
- Confusing risk appetite with risk tolerance. They are related but not interchangeable, and the exam tests the difference.
- Choosing "mitigate" reflexively. Accepting or transferring a risk is often the correct answer when the scenario states cost or business constraints.
- Mixing up agreement types — MSA, SOW, SLA, MOU, NDA, BPA. These appear as straightforward recall and are free marks once learned.
Do not leave this domain until last because it seems less technical. It is close to a fifth of the exam and the questions are mostly definitional, which makes it the highest-yield revision per hour of anything on Security+.
