Security Operations: what Security+ tests and how to prepare
The largest domain on the exam and the most operational. It covers the day-to-day work of securing an estate: hardening, monitoring, vulnerability management, identity and access, automation, and incident response.
What this domain covers
The list below follows the published exam objectives for SY0-701. Depth matters more than breadth here: the exam asks you to apply these ideas to a scenario, not to recite them.
- Applying security techniques to computing resources: hardening targets, wireless security settings, mobile solutions and application security.
- Asset management through the lifecycle, from acquisition to secure disposal and sanitisation.
- Vulnerability management: identification methods, analysis, response and remediation, validation, and reporting.
- Security alerting and monitoring, plus the tools that support it — SIEM, DLP, SNMP traps, NetFlow, antivirus and vulnerability scanners.
- Identity and access management, including provisioning, permission assignment, MFA, password concepts and privileged access management.
- Automation and orchestration, and incident response covering preparation through lessons learned, including root cause analysis and digital forensics.
Where candidates lose marks
- Getting incident response order wrong. Containment precedes eradication and eradication precedes recovery — most wrong answers restore service while the attacker still has access.
- Treating vulnerability scanning results as conclusions rather than input. The exam frequently asks what you do about a finding, including confirming it is not a false positive.
- Confusing authentication with authorisation in identity scenarios, particularly where MFA and privileged access are both in play.
This is the domain to prioritise if you are short on time — it carries the largest share of the exam and most heavily rewards operational judgement rather than recall. Practising incident sequencing pays back faster here than anywhere else.
