Should you take CompTIA CySA+ or Microsoft SC-200?
Choose by environment, not difficulty. CySA+ is vendor-neutral analysis; SC-200 is the same job performed specifically in Microsoft Sentinel and Defender XDR. If your employer runs Microsoft security tooling, SC-200 is the more immediately useful credential.
The shared ground
Both certify a security operations analyst: detection, investigation, incident response. The difference is that CySA+ describes the discipline in the abstract, while SC-200 tests whether you can do it with a specific toolset in front of you.
- SC-200 is tool-specific by designSC-200 covers managing a security operations environment, configuring protections and detections, managing incident response, threat hunting, and responding to incidents — all within Microsoft Sentinel, Defender XDR and the surrounding cloud services. KQL is a working requirement, not a footnote.
- CySA+ transfers between employers more easilyVendor-neutral content stays relevant if you move to an organisation running a different stack. SC-200 is worth more where Microsoft tooling is in use and less where it is not.
- The exam formats differ noticeablyCySA+ allows up to 85 questions in 165 minutes and uses a passing scaled score of 750 on a 100–900 scale. SC-200 provides 100 minutes for the assessment and uses a passing scaled score of 700. Question counts and formats can vary. Neither scaled score can be translated directly into a percentage of correct answers.
- Plan for the retake policy as well as the first attemptMicrosoft requires a 24-hour wait after the first failed attempt and 14 days after subsequent failures, with a maximum of five attempts in 12 months. Retakes require payment unless a qualifying offer includes one. Check each provider’s current policy and the terms of your exam purchase before booking.
Taking them in sequence
They are complements rather than alternatives. Analysts working in Microsoft environments commonly hold both: CySA+ for the discipline, SC-200 for the platform. If you must pick one, pick the one matching the tooling you use or want to use.
